Jewelry Cleaning and Conservation
Frequent use of jewelry alters its shine and appearance, but cleaning and preserving it is something easy and simple that can be done comfortably at home by following some tips.
Gold and silver are noble metals that, due to their physical and chemical properties, have a natural shine that, with a simple polish, achieves an extraordinary brilliance.
However, this shine can be lost due to oxidation when in contact with air, excess heat, humidity or certain substances or products that affect the surface. It is important to bear in mind that perspiration and body pH also affect the deterioration of the piece.
When gold oxidizes it has a reddish tone, and silver has a yellowish or blackish tone.
To avoid deterioration, it is advisable to store the pieces in dry places, away from excess natural or artificial light (spotlights, lamps, etc.) for a long time.
If they are exposed to substances such as chlorine, perfumes, creams, oils, alcohols and makeup, they must be cleaned regularly, either with specialized chamois cloths impregnated with a chemical product, or washed in water.
hot with neutral, mild soaps.
There are also liquid cleaning products that act by immersion and that
They work wonderfully, restoring all the shine and beauty of the jewel.
For their proper preservation and storage, nowadays people avoid storing jewellery in their original cases, which take up so much space. However, we recommend storing them individually in transparent, hermetically sealed bags. This allows us to see and control them when we look for new ones, as well as avoiding rubbing, scratching and oxidation. Taking into account that the space they occupy is considerably reduced, we can keep them in small, safer spaces.
Jewelry with precious or semi-precious stones is very grateful when immersion cleaning methods such as ultrasound are used.
We make this method available to Yanes clients at no cost, and in just a few minutes a surprising change can be observed.
There are ultrasound machines on the market for home use that work very well, and pay for themselves with their good results.
The care and conservation of pearls is very similar to that of other jewelry.
However, the fact that it is organic matter has an even greater influence on its possible loss of shine or orientation when exposed to dry spots, excessive heat or lack of oxygen...
It is therefore advisable to use it frequently and clean it afterwards to remove any traces of perfume, hairspray or similar.
For proper preservation and maintenance of jewelry, it is advisable to periodically check the settings that hold the gems.
Sometimes knocks or snags weaken the settings, putting the hold and security of the stones at risk, so it is advisable to take them to the jeweler for inspection from time to time, to avoid the occasional loss of a gem.
Maintenance of pearl pieces must be done with a certain rigor.
Firstly, because necklaces are strung with silk or metal threads, they are very fine and can easily wear out or break. That is why it is a good idea to re-strung them from time to time so that the thread looks clean and the piece looks like new.
Pearl earrings are more delicate to clean. Pearls are usually glued together, so the glue can melt with moisture and heat, resulting in the pearl falling off.
This is very common with baby earrings, which, due to the minimal amount of glue, come off irremediably with daily rubbing and bathing.
