Size guide
This piece has a very simple structure: On a 16 x 15 cm base of concretion malachite, there are the kneeling figures of two young women. Both made of gold-plated silver, one of them is self-satisfied while the other looks at her face, surely with love.
The ensemble, with a flat base, rests on several small gilt silver figures of busts of naked women. There is a metal label and two buttons, which are brilliant-cut diamonds, on the malachite ground. Gemologically, the only mineral present, apart from the two diamonds, is malachite.
As mentioned in the commentary on another piece, malachite is a fairly common copper carbonate, although not in large masses like the present one, used since the most remote antiquity as an ornament, as a pigment and in obtaining metal. The mass that forms the ground of the figure described is convex, with a flat bottom, and has been carved so that the veins are fairly horizontal, so they resemble sea waves or a comfortable divan of clouds. Malachite has sometimes been used in poetry as a symbol of wealth or fantasy, as in the well-known poem by Rubén Darío entitled “To Margarita Debayle”.
